Empanadas with Pioneer Valley Roller Derby!

From L to R: Bazooka Joe, Pink Panzer, Dee Licious, Snidely Rink Rash

"Hey, it's Bazooka Joe, we're headed back home from Baltimore and we stopped in Morristown. You around?"

Can I get a "Hell, yeah!" Our PVRD peeps dropped in unexpectedly this afternoon, so Dee and 'zilla met them at Raul's for an empanada (or two, or three...) and a chance to yak about our favorite subject, roller derby. They also had some ideas regarding our recent housing woes.

The Dirty Dozen were fresh from their bout with Harm City Homicide last night. They and their sister team, the Western Mass Destruction, are gearing up for their double header in Greenfield, MA coming up on August 22.

Thanks for dropping in, guys!

Tales From Outside The Booth

So for the past three bouts, I've made the transition from score booth jockey to microphone jockey, breaking in my announcer voice with assists from visiting announcers Mary that Motha OH GOD (from the Dutchland Rollers), Jimmy Sharter (from the East Penn CrushBunnies), and Juliette Lewdness (from the Lehigh Valley Roller Girls).

The third time must have been the charm, because this past weekend the nervousness subsided and it finally hit me that I was right in the middle of the action! After experiencing the isolation of the score booth, it was like comparing Blu-ray to Betamax.

Here are some of the sights and sounds I experienced during our last bout against LVRG:

  • The "Whoop!" sound Doom Hilda makes when she feels like her feet are getting ahead of her.
  • Seeing the determined grimace of Hell Razin' Hussy, up close and personal, getting back on her feet after a painful-looking hit.
  • The *smack* a Special Vixen's kneepad made when it collided with Lawless Lizzie's helmet. (This left me speechless when it happened, but Lizzie just shrugged it off and dove right back into the pack.)
  • The mischievous smile on Bozie Banger's face while jamming against Chicana Bruzya and giving her the Bozie Booty Block.
  • And of course, the non-stop stereo soundtrack that anyone standing between the penalty boxes gets as skaters slide in, shrugging and asking, "Why? What did I do?"

Did I stumble over a couple of calls? Sure. Did I mangle someone's derby name at some point? Probably. Have I feared for my bones because there were skaters colliding inches away from my face? Absolutely. But would I rather have some safer seat in the house?

What, and give up show business?

Special thanks go out to Ivy Illegal and Pyro-tech-nix for manning the booth!

05/16/09 Bout Recap

Courtesy of Josie Cuervo from the Dutchland Rollers:

On Saturday, May 16th, 2009, the Dutchland Derby Rollers' B-team, The Dutchland Blitz, visited the Morristown Madams in Morristown, NJ. This would be the first meeting for these two teams. The Blitz 2009 record so far includes one win; 211-46 over the Mason Dixon Roller Vixens (Hagerstown, MD) on April 25th. The Madams recently fell to the Maine Roller Derby B-Team, the Calamity Janes in March, 116-30.

Suiting up for the Blitz would be captains, Marie Antoithreat and Fujiyama Mama, along with Cherry Crush, Jo Clocker (bout debut!), Leah Loveless, Mara Jaded, Megan Whoopie, Rum N. Choke, Ruthless Ness, Sistine Shrapnel, Spanish Incollision, Stompin' Lizzy Stanton (triumphant return to the track!), and White Thrash. Simply the Beth continues to sit out on a knee injury.

For Morristown, on the track was Assault Shaker, Bozie Banger, Dee Licious, Doom Hilda, Inna Propriate, Killawaltz, Leggorcist, Ova Dose, Predator-In-Chief, Raven Rage, Rogue Rage, Village Vixen, and Yula G.

Dutchland's Rum N. Choke on the jammer line against Morristown's Dee Licious, started the game off 9-1 in the Blitz's favor. Next up, Ruthless Ness lined up for Dutchland against Rogue Rage of the home team. Rogue was able to put 4 points up on the board for her team while Ness was shut out. Jam 3 saw Blitz jammer, Mara Jaded put a 4-0 over Bozie Banger, leaving the score 13-5. Rum N. Choke took the star in jam 4 against Doom Hilda and opened it up for Dutchland to secure their lead with a 15-0 run. Jam 5 saw White Thrash take the line for Dutchland looking to score, however; Dee Licious put down an impressive 12-0, trying to even the score. Ruthless Ness and Rogue Rage would go at it 4-4 in jam 6, while Mara Jaded came back in jam 7 tearing it up over Morristown's Killawaltz 13-0, setting the score 45-21 for the visiting team. Despite these power jams coming from the Blitz, the Madams were determined to keep it close and kept answering back with more points. In jam 8, Bozie put up 8-0 over Rum N. Choke, followed by Rogue Rage gaining 2-0 over Ruthless Ness. In jam 10 however, Dutchland's Mara Jaded put 5-0 on Dee Licious. Jams 11, 12, and 13 saw both jammers scoreless; followed by jam 14 where Killwaltz would put 4-0 over Mara Jaded. Doom Hilda gained another 2-0 for the home team in jam 15, while Rum N. Choke was able to answer back with a 4-2 over Dee Licious in the final jam of the period; leaving the score 54-39 in the Dutchland Blitz's favor.

Period two started with neither Rogue Rage nor Ruthless Ness able to put any points up for their teams. Jam 18 saw Rum N. Choke put 9 points to Bozie Banger's 4. Jams 19 and 20 would remain scoreless for both teams. Jam 21 was a pivotal jam as Dee Licious was able to score 4-1 over Mara Jaded's 1, this jam was significant in that it was the last time the Blitz would allow the Madams to score over the next 7 jams, delivering an impressive run of jamming and defense. Rum N. Choke put up another 12 point jam, followed by Ruthless Ness's own 15. Over the next 5 jams, while the Madams remained stuck in a Dutchland pack and in the penalty box, the visitors' 3 jammer rotation would put up another combined 14 points, leaving the score 105-47. Jam 28 saw Dee Licious finally put some points up for her team, however, Ruthless Ness was also able to score, giving the home team little advantage with a 3-2 run. Killawaltz would be slightly more successful in jam 30, putting 5-1 over Rum N. Choke. The final jam of the game saw Ruthless Ness seal the deal with another 12 pointer. The final score in Dutchland's favor was 120-59.

Leading in scoring for the Dutchland Blitz was Rum N. Choke with almost half the team's points at 58 (4.8 pts/jam), Ruthless Ness followed with 33 points (3 pts/jam), and Mara Jaded delivered 29 points (3.6 pts/jam). Choke and Ness were tied for highest single scoring jam of the game with 15 each. There was no penalty information available at press time for Dutchland.

For Morristown, Dee Licious led with 22 points (3.7 pts/jam) and had the highest scoring single jam for her team with 12 points. Rogue Rage totaled 14 (1.75 pts/jam), Bozie Banger had 12 (1/71 pts.jam), and Killawaltz with 9 (3 pts/jam). Raven Rage was assessed the most penalties with 5 majors and minors respectively. Overall, the Madams were assigned 46 minors and 10 majors.

Check out the Dutchland Blitz at the East Coast Extravaganza on June 27th in Feasterville, PA as they face the Uncivil Warriors from River City Rollergirls (Richmond, VA). The Morristown Madams will be back in action at home on on May 30th as they host the East Penn Crushbunnies.

Tales From The Booth, 2/28/09 - Cupids vs. Fallen Angels

by John Wilkes Score Booth (a.k.a. Rogzilla)
I hit up the skaters for music suggestions for this special love-themed bout, and received no less than seven requests for Gloria Gaynor's I Will Survive, the timeless disco anthem for the broken-hearted. I never really listened to the lyrics before, but damn, that song is bitter. Maybe I should be thankful that I spend the bouts surrounded by inch-thick glass?

Tales From The Booth, 1/31/09 - vs. Hudson Valley Horrors

by John Wilkes Score Booth

Dee Licious has gotten knocked down right in front the score booth. From my vantage point up on the stepladder, I have a direct line of sight as her head smacks against the floor. As she slowly stands up I can see that her eyes are spinning around like reels in a slot machine.

It was a rough hit and we're all a little concerned, including Dee. She returns to the home team bench to let the EMTs check her out because of pain in her jaw, but after a few minutes they give her the okay and she's back on the rink.

Later at the Grasshopper, I paint a Looney Toons-esque picture for Dee of her eyes rolling around in their sockets. She thinks this is hilarious. She lets out a big laugh, then abruptly stops and puts her hand to her cheek, letting out a soft little "ow."

My only regret this evening is that I didn't have any romantic music to play while Inna Propriate asked Doom Hilda to be her derby wife. I'll have to download something timeless and poignant, like Peter Cetera's "Glory of Love", just in case this happens again.

Tales From The Booth, 6/14/08-11/15/08

by John Wilkes Score Booth

Seeing a Morristown Madams bout from the score booth is an exercise in selective isolation. You are surrounded by four scratched-up thick glass panels, two of which look out onto the rink and four on the sides that border the visitor and home penalty boxes. The panels are just above eye-level, so most of the sound during the match is blocked out, but once in a while some interesting things make it through...

6/14/08 - vs. Pocono High Rollers

One of the High Rollers is being checked out after a fall by our much-appreciated EMTs in the visitors' penalty box. "Do you know anything about derby girls?" she asks them. "You should know that stuff like this doesn't stop us. We just keep on rolling." They explain to her that she might have cracked a rib and could risk injuring her lung. "So what? I still have my other lung!"

Later on in the game, another High Roller has taken a spill at turn 2 and the EMTs are attending to her. Ova Dose has been manning the Madams' penalty box to my right, and as she turns away from the rink she has a look on her face that is truly pained. "I can't take it when this happens." She glances out at the EMTs briefly, then looks away again, her knuckles turning white as she grips the edge of the hole in the glass.

9/27/08 - vs. Hudson Valley Horrors

Ova Dose has made her triumphant return to the rink, and takes a brief spill during one of the jams. She's waiting on the bench before the second period starts, and to me she doesn't seem like her usual energetic self. I pop my head over the top of the booth and ask how she's doing.

"I don't think I'm brave enough to go out there," she tells me with an uneasy smile. I try to give her a pep talk but I don't think it's working. "Come on, you're brave enough to go out there in the first place, so you're brave enough to go back."

She looks up at me and says, "You don't understand, that's not brave, that's stupid," pronouncing that last word as only a girl from Liverpool can.

11/1/2008 - vs. Lehigh Valley Special Vixens Unit

You learn something new every day. Today I'm learning that the score board doesn't display "99." Unfortunately I learn this during the final minutes of the bout.

Okay, reset home team score (scoreboard goes blank). Add 99 points to home team score (scoreboard shows a big fat zero). Hm, maybe another approach. Reset home team score (scoreboard goes blank). Add 1 point to home team score (scoreboard shows a one). Add 98 points to home team score (scoreboard shows a big fat zero, again).

Meanwhile, the zebras in the center island, the Madams, and the Vixens are all yelling, "That's not the right score!" while the bout continues. Eventually the Madams win by one point in a furious final jam, but I miss it entirely while I frantically press buttons.

11/15/08 - vs. Suburbia Roller Derby

Poor Bozie Banger. Not only is she in the penalty box, but she's at the mercy of me and D-Ball, who is coaching the team tonight in her Bear Bryant get-up. Usually when D-Ball skates for the Madams she makes plenty of noise by slamming her helmet against the side wall. Tonight all she has for a noisemaker is a plastic clipboard, which is barely holding up from the abuse.

I start poking fun at D-Ball by slamming my whiteboard against the booth. D-Ball responds and soon we're playing "Dueling Boards" with Bozie in the middle. She looks at both of us like we're crazy. (We are, and she should know this by now.)

A few moments later, Mega Menace is returning to the bench and D-Ball breaks the clipboard while smacking her on the butt with it. Maybe we should get her a metal one next time.
